For many years of my life, I lived in a perpetual cycle of self-sabotage. When I first surrendered to the Lord, one of my earliest prayers was, “Keep me and don’t ever allow me to walk away from You.” I prayed that because I had never seen anyone truly walk out their salvation without eventually backsliding, and I knew I never wanted that to be my story.
The Lord has honored that prayer. What I didn’t understand at the time was the level of spiritual growth and inner transformation that would be required to walk closely with Him. When I made the decision to follow God wholeheartedly, I tried to sanctify myself without fully understanding spiritual principles. I called everything I experienced “spiritual warfare,” but as I’ve matured in my faith, I now realize that much of what I labeled warfare was my own unrenewed thought patterns.
When I made the conscious decision to walk with the Lord, I was willing but my lack of scripture, spiritual understanding, and knowledge of God’s principles kept me in a cycle of bondage. I didn’t fully understand that life is spiritual and that everything we do in the physical world has implications in the spiritual realm. I wanted to change. I had the desire to change. But the programming that had been embedded in me since childhood was dictating the life I lived. It kept me in a constant war within myself.
The real battle wasn’t always external it was between what I believed and what was actually true.
Many times we live in lies, but because we don’t know there is another way, we accept those lies as truth. Once a lie is accepted as truth, it gains power to remain. But the moment truth is revealed, it has the power to set us free. For me, truth was the missing piece. I was reading the Word of God, going to church, and learning principles, but deep down I still didn’t believe I was deserving of good things. So whenever something good began to happen, my internal programming would sabotage it. I would destroy what God was trying to build because I didn’t believe I deserved it.
How did I realize I was the one creating destruction?
I began to recognize that everything isn’t a fight. For the first time in my life, I was able to see that I had never truly entered the rest of the Lord. It wasn’t the devil stopping me it was my own destructive thought patterns. For so long, I blamed everything on the enemy, when in reality the enemy within me my thinking, my choices, my lack of discipline was creating the reality I was living.
It was never that God wasn’t hearing me or answering me. It was the principles I was (or wasn’t) applying. The Bible says, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” What you don’t know and what you don’t recognize as a problem will keep you in cycles. Breaking free required me to first acknowledge that my own thoughts were a problem. Then I had to sit with myself and ask the question I had avoided for years: What is the real problem?
This question matters because if you never get to the root, you will continue to produce the same negative fruit.
My root issue was believing I wasn’t worthy of love or good things. My childhood was marked by abandonment, rejection, and both physical and emotional abuse. I learned early how not to be a burden to others who already had problems of their own. As a child, I adapted to abusive environments. I learned to accept whatever I was given and be grateful for it. I was taught not to ask questions and to love the very people who hurt me.
This programmed me to tolerate mistreatment, settle for less, and silence my voice because I believed my needs didn’t matter. I learned to disconnect from my feelings and emotions in relationships. I developed the belief that people couldn’t be trusted. This was the programming of trauma speaking and shaping the reality I continued to live as an adult.
You can’t conquer what you don’t see.
For years, I didn’t understand why I couldn’t move forward. But the truth is, until my mind was renewed, nothing could change. I would continue attracting the same patterns, tolerating the same environments, and sabotaging my own progress because the internal program had never been rewritten.
Before you go, I want you to pause and reflect for a moment. Have you ever recognized areas in your life where you may be unintentionally sabotaging the very things you’ve prayed for? Maybe it shows up as fear of success, settling for less, avoiding opportunities, or believing you’re not worthy of what God is trying to give you. Take a moment to be honest with yourself what patterns keep repeating, and what might God be trying to reveal so you can finally break free? Your awareness is the first step toward healing, and your freedom begins the moment you confront what’s been holding you back.
